Comparisons & Alternatives

☝️ The most important facts in brief

  • WhatsApp campaigns are only available in Brevo's Professional and Enterprise plans according to its own website; Professional starts at €499 per month per the help center.
  • For pure email marketing, rapidmail and CleverReach (servers in Germany), ActiveCampaign, Omnisend, and Klaviyo are the strongest Brevo alternatives.
  • Brevo bills by email volume, but automatically bumps your plan to the next tier once you exceed the contact limit of your pricing level.
  • GDPR is no reason to switch: Brevo hosts in the EU (OVH France/Germany, Google Cloud Belgium); only shops requiring servers in Germany need rapidmail or CleverReach.
  • If WhatsApp is all you are missing, the cheapest alternative to Brevo is no switch at all: Chatarmin connects to your existing Brevo setup via property sync.

5,000 contacts, a well-kept email list, and now you want to add WhatsApp. This is where the search for a Brevo alternative usually begins: at Brevo (formerly Sendinblue), WhatsApp campaigns only come with the Professional plan, from €499 per month.

That plan is sized for 150,000 to 10 million emails. For a shop sending four newsletters a month, that is the wrong door.

The email tool itself is rarely the problem. Usually a channel is missing, the pricing structure raises questions, or data protection needs a proper answer.

This guide sorts out all three cases: which alternatives to Brevo exist for pure email marketing, what Brevo WhatsApp can actually do, and when you should keep your tool and simply add the missing channel.

Is there an alternative to Brevo?

Yes. For email marketing, rapidmail and CleverReach (both on servers in Germany) plus ActiveCampaign, Omnisend, and Klaviyo are the most relevant Brevo alternatives. For WhatsApp marketing, keep Brevo and add a specialist like Chatarmin instead of switching email tools. It comes down to whether you are missing a channel or a tool.

Brevo alternatives at a glance

Not a ranking, but a mapping. Prices reflect the public state at the time of writing (July 30, 2026), sources linked in each row.

Tool Strength A fit if … Entry point
rapidmail no-frills email, servers in Germany, phone support you send rarely and data protection is a hard requirement Essential from €15/month for up to 500 recipients, or pay per mailing (OMR Reviews)
CleverReach email plus automation workflows, servers in Germany you run Shopware or WooCommerce and want German hosting Lite plan free (250 contacts), paid plans from €15 net (simon-erklaert.com)
ActiveCampaign deep automation logic plus CRM your email journeys are more complex than your shop contact-based, price grows with your list
Omnisend e-commerce email and SMS in one tool you sell on Shopify and want both channels bundled contact-based
Klaviyo the D2C benchmark for data-driven email retention built on shop data is your core business billed by active profiles (klaviyo.com)
Chatarmin WhatsApp marketing plus armincx AI support, connects to Brevo WhatsApp should drive revenue without an email migration demo-based, no public pricing
Keeping Brevo affordable volume-based model, broad feature set email stays your only channel free plan with 300 emails/day (brevo.com)

My take: If you are missing an email feature, switch your email tool. If you are missing a channel, do not switch the tool. Add the channel. The most expensive mistake on this list is migrating your entire email setup because of WhatsApp.

What Brevo does well, and where it pinches

Let's start fair. Brevo bills primarily by emails sent, not by contacts stored. If you keep a large list but send rarely, that often works out cheaper than contact-based US tools. According to Brevo's help center, the Starter plan begins at €7 per month, Standard at €17, Professional at €499.

User praise is consistent too: on OMR Reviews, Germany's leading B2B software review platform, reviewers highlight the easy handling, the drag-and-drop editor, and the support.

Still, three things are worth knowing before you even need an alternative to Brevo:

  • Contact limits with auto-upgrades. Each pricing tier carries a contact limit. On the lower tiers (500, 1,500, and 2,500 contacts), Brevo warns you at 85% of the limit according to its help center; once you exceed it, your plan is automatically bumped to the next tier. Costs rise without you confirming the upgrade yourself.
  • Add-on costs below Professional. The Standard plan includes 1 landing page (you only get 10 from Professional up), and each additional user costs €9 per month, capped at 3 users. Phone support only starts at Professional. Source for all three points: the Brevo help center linked above.
  • A confusing pricing structure. That is exactly what the review summary on OMR names as a recurring criticism, alongside occasional performance issues and limits in template customization.

None of this is a dealbreaker. But it explains why "brevo alternative" is not a niche search term.

Brevo WhatsApp: what you get, and what you don't

This is the most common reason e-commerce brands go looking for an alternative to Brevo. Because Brevo does offer WhatsApp. Just not for everyone.

What Brevo delivers: WhatsApp campaigns with up to 1,024 characters, CTAs, videos and emojis, plus WhatsApp steps inside workflows and a way to manage incoming replies. That is how Brevo's own WhatsApp page describes it.

The catch: The same page states that WhatsApp campaigns are only available in the Professional and Enterprise plans, with access via a guided demo with the sales team. And Professional starts at €499 per month according to Brevo's help center.

Even prepaid WhatsApp credits are an add-on reserved for these two plans.

In plain terms: a shop with 5,000 contacts books a €499 high-volume sender package to test a second channel.

Then there is the scope. Brevo's WhatsApp feature is one channel module inside an email platform. Running WhatsApp as a revenue channel takes more: abandoned-cart flows fed with live shop data, revenue attribution per campaign, two-way conversations answered by AI. That is specialist territory.

The third option almost nobody prices in: keep Brevo and dock WhatsApp onto it. Chatarmin syncs contact properties with Brevo, a Brevo segment can trigger a WhatsApp flow, and email opt-in plus WhatsApp opt-in can be built as one combined journey. Your email stack stays put; the new channel runs alongside it.

Counterpoint: If you plan only two or three WhatsApp sends a year and you are on the Professional plan anyway, Brevo's built-in feature is probably enough. A specialist pays off once you run regular campaigns and automated flows, not for token sends.

Brevo and GDPR: the sober assessment

Some comparison articles swing the GDPR hammer at Brevo. That is sloppy, so let's be precise. For shops selling into Germany, Austria, and Switzerland, this section usually decides the shortlist.

What speaks for Brevo: Brevo is a European company headquartered in Paris that has operated under its new name since the 2023 rebrand. Its DACH roots are real: in 2019, the company, then still under its old name, acquired the Berlin-based provider Newsletter2Go.

Hosting happens exclusively in the EU according to the help center: primarily with OVH in France and Germany, plus Google Cloud in Belgium. On its data protection overview, Brevo lists a data processing agreement, EU server locations, and a TÜV Rheinland audit report.

What you should still check: Brevo's privacy policy states that the company also operates in the United States and uses service providers outside the EU. Cross-border transfers are therefore possible.

If your internal compliance rules are strict, read the sub-processor list in the DPA before signing. And if servers in Germany are a hard requirement on your checklist, you end up with rapidmail or CleverReach anyway.

Is Brevo German? No, Brevo is not a German company. But the interface runs in German, email support answers in six languages according to the pricing page, and the German-speaking community is large. For most DACH shops, the company's origin is not the deciding factor here. The hosting question is the relevant one.

And if the new channel is WhatsApp? Then the sober assessment includes this too: WhatsApp messages run through Meta's infrastructure, no matter which tool you put in front of it. Anyone promising you "100% data sovereignty" in WhatsApp marketing is talking nonsense.

What you can control is everything around it: documented double opt-in, a data processing agreement with your tool provider, clean data flows between shop, email tool, and WhatsApp platform. That is exactly how Chatarmin is built, and exactly why we would rather raise the Meta point ourselves before your data protection officer does.

The Brevo alternatives in detail

rapidmail: email marketing on servers in Germany

The provider from Freiburg does one thing and keeps it simple: newsletters. You pay either per mailing (handy for infrequent sends) or via the Essential subscription from €15 per month for up to 500 recipients, as listed on OMR Reviews as of January 2026. Phone support included.

As a Brevo alternative, rapidmail is a fit if you send few mailings, need German servers, and don't plan complex automations. Not a fit if you want multi-step journeys or multichannel.

CleverReach: the German automation candidate

CleverReach from Rastede near Oldenburg is the German Brevo alternative with more automation depth than rapidmail, also on servers in Germany. The Lite plan is permanently free (250 contacts, 1,000 emails/month) according to simon-erklaert.com, with paid plans starting at €15 net. Connectors for Shopware, WooCommerce, and Shopify are available.

A fit if you are GDPR-strict and need email automations. Not a fit if you expect SMS, WhatsApp, or a CRM in the same tool.

ActiveCampaign: automation depth above all

If your customer journeys are more complex than your product catalog, ActiveCampaign is the strongest Brevo alternative in this set. Nested automations, scoring, a built-in CRM. Billing is contact-based, so it grows with your list.

A fit if you want marketing and sales mapped in one workflow system. Not a fit if Brevo already felt like too many menus.

Omnisend: e-commerce focus with email and SMS

As an alternative to Brevo for Shopify stores, Omnisend is built for online retail from the ground up. Email and SMS run on one platform, with templates and flows designed around commerce triggers.

A fit if you run a Shopify store and want email plus SMS bundled. Not a fit if the DACH data protection stack (German servers, German-language support) sits at the top of your list.

Klaviyo: the D2C benchmark

Klaviyo is the most obvious Brevo alternative for data-driven email marketing in the D2C segment, with deep shop data. Billing works by active profiles, which can get more expensive than Brevo's volume model if your list is large but mostly inactive.

A fit if retention built on segments and shop events is your core business. Not a fit if cost is your main reason for leaving Brevo.

And Chatarmin? Not a Brevo alternative in the classic sense

Time for plain talk about ourselves: Chatarmin is not an email tool. If you are looking for a better newsletter program, the list above is where you'll find it, not here.

Chatarmin is WhatsApp marketing plus AI customer service (armincx) for e-commerce brands in the DACH region. On OMR Reviews, the tool stands at 4.8 out of 5 stars from 100 reviews (as of July 30, 2026).

The typical setup next to Brevo: campaigns and flows on WhatsApp, abandoned-cart recovery fed with live shop data from Shopify, Shopware, or JTL, and armincx answering incoming replies automatically.

We are a fit if:

  • WhatsApp should drive revenue, not just push messages out: campaigns with revenue attribution, flows built on shop data.
  • You want to keep your email setup. Brevo stays; Chatarmin connects via property sync and segment triggers.
  • Replies should not go unanswered. armincx resolves a large share of incoming requests automatically and hands the rest to your team or ticketing system.
  • DACH is your market. German-speaking team, guided setup, and a GDPR-compliant opt-in concept.

We are not a fit if:

  • you run email marketing exclusively,
  • your shop is still too small for WhatsApp to carry meaningful volume,
  • you want a self-service tool with a public price list to configure on your own. With us, the entry point is a demo.

Brevo reviews: what users report

So your search for an alternative to Brevo doesn't rest on our take alone, here is the external record:

  • OMR Reviews (4.5 out of 5 stars from 444 reviews as of July 30, 2026): praise goes to the handling, the newsletter editor, and the support. The review summary lists occasional performance issues, limited template customization, free-plan restrictions, and a pricing structure perceived as confusing.
  • Trustpilot: 4 out of 5 stars from more than 7,000 reviews (trustpilot.com, as of July 2026). A solid score for a tool of this size.
  • Capterra and G2: both platforms also list several thousand reviews each, and the overall picture matches OMR and Trustpilot.

In short: Brevo is not a tool anyone needs to warn you about. The criticism is about pricing transparency and limits in the details, not fundamentals.

Canceling Sendinblue and switching: how the move works

If you do decide to switch, getting out is straightforward. According to the help center, Brevo offers monthly or annual terms, cancelable anytime directly in your account and effective at the next billing date. You export contact data as CSV, which Brevo explicitly confirms on its GDPR page.

For the migration itself, wherever you go:

  1. Export lists and opt-in proof. Double-opt-in records must come along, or you rebuild your legal basis from scratch.
  2. Verify your sending domain in the new tool (SPF, DKIM, DMARC) before the first campaign goes out.
  3. Rebuild and test automations. Workflows never migrate at the push of a button.
  4. Warm up deliverability. Small segments first, then the full list.

And once more, because it saves money: if all you want is to add WhatsApp, there is nothing to cancel. Dock the channel, keep the email stack, done.

Conclusion: the right alternative to Brevo hangs on one question

Are you missing an email feature or a channel? For the first case, rapidmail and CleverReach are the GDPR-strict route, ActiveCampaign the automation route, Omnisend and Klaviyo the e-commerce route. For the second case, the cheapest Brevo alternative is often no switch at all, but an addition.

If WhatsApp is the missing channel: book a demo and we'll show you how Chatarmin runs alongside your Brevo setup, with your shop data and a realistic look at whether the channel already pays off at your size.
