You picked Manychat for Instagram. Comment-to-DM works, leads come in, all good.
Then you want to reach 12,000 existing customers on WhatsApp with cart reminders, shipping updates and restock alerts. And you notice: the tool is built for creators, not for your shop.
That is where most e-commerce brands in the DACH region start looking for a Manychat alternative. Not because Manychat is bad. But because WhatsApp marketing in e-commerce runs on order data. And Manychat does not deliver that natively.
Is there an alternative to Manychat?
Yes. For Instagram and Messenger automation, Manychat remains one of the strongest options on the market. For WhatsApp marketing in German-speaking e-commerce, specialised alternatives exist: Chatarmin, charles, Superchat, Mateo and respond.io.
Which one fits comes down to three questions:
- Is WhatsApp a revenue channel for you, or a side stage?
- Do you need order, cart and shipping data live inside your flows?
- Who handles support when a campaign to 12,000 contacts stalls on a Friday night?
Manychat alternatives at a glance
There is no single Manychat alternative. There are three categories: creator tools for social DMs, multichannel generalists for the service inbox, and WhatsApp tools specialised in e-commerce.
| Tool | Strength | Fits | WhatsApp depth |
|---|---|---|---|
| Chatarmin | Shop-native flows, Klaviyo sync, German-speaking support, servers in Frankfurt | D2C brands on Shopify, Shopware or JTL | Core product |
| charles | E-commerce focus, conversational commerce | Larger brands with their own CRM team | Core product |
| Superchat | Multichannel inbox, broad SMB offering, German company | Retail and services with a support focus | Strong, generalist |
| Mateo | Lean inbox, local use cases, fast onboarding | Smaller teams, brick and mortar | Solid |
| respond.io | Omnichannel routing, international teams | Brands supporting several countries | Strong |
| Chatfuel | WhatsApp and Meta automation, Meta partner | International performance setups | Strong |
| Manychat | Instagram comment automation, flow builder, huge community | Creators, social-first brands | Available, from Pro |
Why no price column? Because it would be wrong the moment Meta adjusts its rates. On WhatsApp your final cost always has two parts: software plus Meta's per-message fees. Every "starting at X" table hides the second one.
What is Manychat built for?
Manychat is a US platform (Manychat Inc.) for chat automation across Instagram, Facebook Messenger, TikTok, Telegram, WhatsApp, SMS and email. The core of the product: a visual flow builder plus comment-to-DM.
Someone comments "GUIDE" under your reel, the bot sends the link by DM. Almost nobody does that better.
The product is cut for creators and small teams, and the vendor says so itself: its own pricing page describes the platform as built for "creators and social-first businesses" (manychat.com/pricing, as of 29 July 2026).
The user base backs that up. On G2, the tool sits at 4.5 out of 5 stars from close to 160 reviews, and 89.4% of those come from the small business segment (as of 29 July 2026).
That is not a weakness. That is positioning. Just a different one from a shop running WhatsApp as a revenue channel.
What Manychat costs in 2026
Since 2 March 2026, a new pricing model with five plans applies. Billing runs on Active Contacts, meaning people who interact with your automation in a given month (Manychat Help Center).
| Plan | Active contacts / month | Price on annual billing | Overage per extra contact | Relevant for shops |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Free | 25 | $0 | not available | Sandbox |
| Essential | 250 | $14/month ($168/year) | $0.082 | 2 channels, no WhatsApp |
| Pro | 2,500 | $29/month ($348/year) | $0.038 | WhatsApp starts here, 3 channels |
| Business | 7,500 | $69/month ($828/year) | $0.018 | All channels, 5 users |
| Advanced | 25,000 | $139/month ($1,668/year) | $0.0028 | All channels, 10 users |

Four details the vendor marketing plays down:
Monthly billing costs noticeably more. The table shows annual billing. For Essential and Pro, the App Store lists the monthly subscriptions at $17 and $39. For Business and Advanced, the stated 30% annual discount works out to roughly $99 and $199. Overage rates rise on monthly billing too: $0.10 on Essential, $0.05 on Pro, $0.025 on Business, $0.004 on Advanced.
Overage is charged per additional active contact per month, not as a one-off fee. Reach 5,000 contacts instead of 2,500 in a campaign month and Pro adds $95 on annual billing.
Annual plans still count monthly. According to the pricing page, active contacts are recalculated every month and overages are billed monthly. One strong month hits your invoice immediately.
The new plans currently apply to new accounts only. According to the Help Center, they are reserved for accounts created on or after 2 March 2026. If you have been around longer, you are probably still on the old model.
Where Manychat gets tight for WhatsApp in DACH commerce
Manychat does WhatsApp. The question is when the setup turns expensive or awkward for a shop.
1. WhatsApp only starts on Pro. Free and Essential cover two channels, WhatsApp is included from Pro upwards. For a pure WhatsApp use case you pay for the Instagram stack from day one.
2. Your bill grows with reach, not with revenue. Active Contacts means one viral post lifts your cost, even when your automation stays the same. On top of that come Meta's per-message fees, which apply with every provider.
To be fair: the pricing page lets you set an overage threshold, and if you upgrade within the same billing cycle, the overage charged so far is waived. That does not change the logic. The price tracks reach, not revenue.
3. For shop data, the vendor points to middleware. For cart recovery, order status and shipping updates, Manychat moderators in the company's own community forum point to Shopify Flow, Zapier or Make (thread). A feature request for an order listener covering order status notifications has been open on the ideas board since 2024 (as of 29 July 2026).
In practice: your post-purchase flows depend on middleware you maintain yourself.
For a shop with 200 orders a day, that is the difference between "it runs" and "someone clears the Zapier error log every Monday".
Is Manychat available in German?
Your customers get German messages, obviously. You write those yourself. The platform around them stays English.
The US App Store listing for the Manychat app names English, Portuguese and Spanish as its languages (as of 29 July 2026). German is not among them. The Help Center runs exclusively under en-us, and so do the docs and support communication.
Manychat publishes no language list for the web interface. The three languages of the mobile app are the most reliable public data point.
What that means for you: whoever builds flows works in English. Whoever files a support ticket does too. For a German marketing team with working students, that is an onboarding hurdle. For an English-speaking growth team, it is a non-issue.
The data protection part
The vendor provides a Data Processing Addendum, which is more than many competitors do. The DPA states that personal data is also processed outside the EEA and in the United States. As a transfer mechanism it names the EU-US Data Privacy Framework, with Standard Contractual Clauses as a fallback. According to its privacy policy, Manychat Inc. is certified under the EU-US DPF (as of 29 July 2026).
That is not a breach of law, and it is not a GDPR scare story. It is work for you: document the third-country transfer in your record of processing activities, sign the DPA, review the technical and organisational measures, update your privacy policy.
If your data protection officer needs three weeks for every US tool, that is a real cost factor.
Free Manychat alternatives: what 0 euros actually buys
The question about a free Manychat alternative has a fair core. And an uncomfortable answer.
The free tiers on the market:
- Manychat Free: 25 active contacts, two channels, no WhatsApp (Help Center)
- Superchat Free: 30 active contacts, one WhatsApp number, one user seat (pricing page, as of 29 July 2026)
Both are test environments, not operating systems for a shop. One traffic spike is enough to blow the limit.
The bigger point: WhatsApp marketing is never free. Since 1 July 2025, Meta bills per delivered template message rather than per 24-hour conversation. Incoming customer messages stay free, and so do replies and utility templates inside the open 24-hour window. The shipping update after a customer question costs you nothing. Your marketing campaign costs money per recipient.
A vendor can give you the software. The channel cost stays.
Anyone searching for "free" while planning 5,000 marketing messages a month is really searching for Meta fees passed through without markup. That is a different question. And the right one.
Manychat reviews: what users report publicly
Reviews lean positive, with a clear pattern in the criticism.
What gets praised: usability, fast setup, automation. The positive tags G2 generates from real reviews cluster almost entirely around those three.
What gets criticised: poor customer support, missing features, cost, pricing issues. On "Quality of Support", the G2 score sits at 8.3. Solid, but below what competitors in the same category reach.
One G2 reviewer describes losing account access during a billing issue, leaving their own shop's WhatsApp support down for close to three days. Over the weekend, they write, help was effectively unavailable (paraphrased, source).
The community forum also carries recurring threads about charges after cancellation. Manychat documents the process cleanly. The pattern in those threads is usually an invoice already generated for the running cycle.
From our own work with DACH merchants, the driver behind these reviews is rarely a single feature. It is the combination of support time zone, billing logic and missing shop integration.
When you should stay with Manychat
The honest part most comparison articles leave out: for a large share of searchers, switching makes no sense.
Stay with Manychat if Instagram is your main channel. Comment-to-DM, story replies, follow-to-DM: that part of the product is mature, the community is huge, templates exist for every case. No WhatsApp specialist in the DACH region builds you a better funnel there.
Stay as well if you automate TikTok or Telegram, or if WhatsApp is a secondary service channel with no shop connection.
And the most pragmatic case: run both. Manychat for social DMs, a WhatsApp tool for campaigns and order communication. Two tools, two jobs. That is not a flaw in your stack. It is often the cheapest setup.
Chatarmin as a Manychat alternative: who we fit and who we do not
We build WhatsApp marketing for e-commerce in the DACH region. A narrower position than Manychat, with consequences in both directions.
We fit if:
- WhatsApp is meant to be a revenue channel, not just a reply channel
- your stack reads Shopify, Shopware, JTL, WooCommerce or Xentral and you want cart recovery, back-in-stock and post-purchase flows without Zapier duct tape
- you run Klaviyo and want segments syncing in both directions
- data residency in Frankfurt and a German-language DPA are purchasing requirements for you
- you want a dedicated German-speaking contact who also handles the Meta onboarding
- you want Meta fees passed through 1:1
We do not fit if:
- Instagram comment automation is your main use case. Manychat is the better tool there, no argument.
- you connect no shop system and use WhatsApp only to reply
- you want pure self-service software with no guided onboarding. Our setup is hands-on, and that shows in the price.
- your focus is TikTok or Telegram bots
For the service side (order status, returns, product questions) we run armincx, our AI customer experience suite. That is a separate product, not a checkbox in a marketing tool.
Conclusion: which Manychat alternative fits you?
Manychat is a creator tool that happens to include WhatsApp. Not a WhatsApp tool that also does Instagram. That distinction answers the question of the right Manychat alternative almost by itself.
If you are social-first and automating Instagram DMs: stay where you are.
If you run WhatsApp as a revenue channel with shop data, German-speaking support and documented EU data residency: you need a specialised tool. The choice in the DACH market is good.
Want to see what your flows would look like with real shop data, including the maths on your contact numbers and Meta fees? Book a demo. Thirty minutes, and you will know whether we fit. Even if the answer is no.
FAQ about Manychat alternatives
Is there an alternative to Manychat?
Yes. For WhatsApp marketing in DACH e-commerce, Chatarmin, charles, Superchat, Mateo and respond.io are the most relevant Manychat alternatives. For Instagram automation, Manychat itself remains one of the strongest options.
What does Manychat cost in 2026?
On annual billing: Free (25 contacts), Essential ($14/month, 250), Pro ($29/month, 2,500), Business ($69/month, 7,500), Advanced ($139/month, 25,000). Monthly billing runs roughly 18% to 30% higher, plus overage per extra contact and Meta's per-message WhatsApp fees (as of 29 July 2026).

No. The App Store listing names English, Portuguese and Spanish as the languages of the Manychat app, and the Help Center runs under en-us. Your customer messages are of course still written in German.

It depends on how you use and document it. Manychat provides a DPA and is certified under the EU-US Data Privacy Framework, but processes data in the United States as well. You need to cover the third-country transfer in your record of processing activities.
Can Manychat send WhatsApp newsletters?
Yes. WhatsApp broadcasts are available from the Pro plan, with Meta's per-delivered-message fees on top of the subscription.
How do I cancel Manychat?
Go to Settings, then Billing, then Cancel Subscription, pick a reason and confirm. Cancellation takes effect at the end of the current billing period. Within 30 days of your first purchase you can request a refund from support (Help Center).
Is there a free Manychat alternative?
It depends on your plans. Free software tiers exist (Manychat Free with 25 contacts, Superchat with 30), but Meta's per-message WhatsApp fees always apply.
Which Manychat alternative works with Shopify?
Tools with native shop integration such as Chatarmin or charles, because cart, order and shipping data run into the flow without Zapier or Make. For those use cases, Manychat's own community points to middleware.
