Your Klaviyo bill goes up even though you are sending exactly as much as last month. That is the moment many shops start looking for a Klaviyo alternative. The reason: since February 2025, Klaviyo counts every emailable profile towards your bill, including the ones you never contact. Here is the honest map: four email tools as a real alternative to Klaviyo. Plus the case where staying is the smarter move, and a route with no cancellation at all.
Is there an alternative to Klaviyo?
Yes. rapidmail, CleverReach, ActiveCampaign and Omnisend cover email marketing with different strengths: German server locations, a cheap entry point, deep automations or e-commerce flows at a lower price. If you are basically happy with Klaviyo and just want a smaller bill, list hygiene often gets you further than switching tools.
Why shops look for Klaviyo alternatives: the active profile model
Klaviyo has billed by active profiles since 18 February 2025. According to Klaviyo, an active profile is any profile that can be reached by email, regardless of consent status. That includes the contact who left an email address at checkout and never signed up for your newsletter (source: Klaviyo Help Center, "How Klaviyo billing works", as of March 2026).
The model has two consequences you need to know. First: your plan must cover your profile count. If you exceed the limit, Klaviyo automatically moves you up a tier at the next billing cycle. Klaviyo calls this profile enforcement.
Second: a downgrade does not happen automatically by default. Either you trigger it yourself, more than 24 hours before the cycle ends, or you activate the auto-downgrade option in your billing preferences (source: Klaviyo Help Center).
Entry pricing for the email plan starts at $20 per month for up to 500 active profiles. The free tier ends at 250 profiles and 500 sends. As your list grows, the price climbs with every profile tier. Existing customers who sat far above their plan tier at the changeover received an automatic appreciation discount. It capped the price jump at a maximum of 25% (source: Klaviyo Help Center, FAQ on 18 February 2025). A list grows for years through popups and checkouts. That exact stock then costs money every month, even if part of it went inactive long ago.
In practice, this means: check your list first, then the market. Suppressed and deleted profiles do not count towards Klaviyo billing. A sunset flow suppresses contacts with no opens for six to twelve months. That often cuts the bill harder than any switch of provider. If your list is clean and the maths still hurts, keep reading.
Four Klaviyo alternatives in an honest comparison
All four tools below are serious options with their own profile. For each one, we tell you who it fits and where the catch is. Two of them come from Germany, which matters if you sell into the DACH region (Germany, Austria and Switzerland) and data location is part of your evaluation.
rapidmail: German servers and phone support
rapidmail hosts in Germany and builds its email marketing entirely around GDPR requirements, with a drag-and-drop editor and automation workflows (source: OMR Reviews, the leading German software review platform, rapidmail product profile). The Essential tier starts at €15 per month for up to 500 recipients and up to 10 mailings (source: OMR Reviews, rapidmail pricing page, as of January 2026).
The most praised point is support: phone support is included in every tier, even the cheapest, with the provider clearly geared towards German-speaking teams. The catch: A/B tests and send-time scheduling only come with the Performance tier (source: EmailTooltester, rapidmail review 2026).
Take rapidmail as your Klaviyo alternative if classic newsletters are your main play, your list stays manageable and German server locations are a decision criterion for you. For deep shop automations with purchase-history segments, the tool is too lean.
CleverReach: the German classic since 2007
CleverReach comes from Rastede in Lower Saxony and has been on the market since 2007. The Lite tier is permanently free for up to 250 recipients and 1,000 emails per month. Basic starts at €15 and Pro at €18 per month, each with unlimited sending (source: OMR Reviews, CleverReach pricing page, as of July 2026). Billing is based on the number of recipients in your list.
So the same truth applies here as at Klaviyo, just at a smaller scale: inactive contacts cost money, and list hygiene stays mandatory. For very large senders there is the Enterprise tier from €499 per month, which bills by emails sent instead of list size (source: CleverReach pricing page, as of July 2026).
CleverReach fits as an alternative to Klaviyo if you want a German provider with plenty of shop and CMS integrations and your automation needs sit in the middle of the field. Klaviyo's predictive e-commerce features, such as segmentation by expected buying behaviour, are not available here at that depth.
ActiveCampaign: automations with real depth
ActiveCampaign from Chicago is the choice for anyone who has outgrown Klaviyo flows. Multi-step automation journeys, lead scoring and campaign orchestration are its core. The Starter tier begins at €15 per month for 1,000 contacts on annual billing. Plus sits at €49, Pro at €79 (source: ActiveCampaign pricing page, checked August 2026).
Two points belong in the honest calculation. The CRM module Pipelines is not included in any tier and costs extra, including a per-user fee. And the price scales with the contact count in your database. A growing list shifts the maths just like it does at Klaviyo.
Take ActiveCampaign if you want to run complex funnels beyond email, for example with a B2B share or consultative journeys. For a pure D2C shop with standard flows, it is often more tool than you need.
Omnisend: the most direct Klaviyo replacement for Shopify
Of the four tools, Omnisend is built closest to Klaviyo: e-commerce focus, pre-built flows for abandoned carts and welcome series, tight Shopify integration. The free plan covers up to 250 contacts and 500 emails per month. Standard starts at $16 for 500 contacts, with a send volume of twelve times your contact count. Pro is available from $59 with unlimited sending (source: Omnisend Help Center, Pricing Plans 2026).
The billing logic deserves a look here too: Omnisend counts billable contacts including non-subscribers, and your pricing tier adjusts automatically to your contact count. Since 4 May 2026, SMS is also only available on the Pro plan for new customers (source: Omnisend Help Center).
Omnisend is the right Klaviyo alternative if you want the familiar flow logic at a lower price and can live without Klaviyo's data depth. The switch hurts least here, because the concepts are almost identical.
When keeping Klaviyo is the better decision
Honesty cuts both ways: Klaviyo sets the standard in the Shopify world for segmentation, flows and data integration. Over the years, purchase histories, segments and a clean sender reputation build up in there. When you switch, you take on real risk. You rebuild flows, you warm up your sending domain again, and history rarely migrates completely.
If a noticeable share of your revenue hangs on Klaviyo flows, run the numbers on the other route first: list hygiene plus a downgrade. For many shops, the more interesting question is what is missing next to Klaviyo anyway.
Keep email, add WhatsApp: the route without cancelling
An email newsletter reaches a 20 to 30% open rate in many shops. WhatsApp campaigns through Chatarmin sit at 85%. That is exactly why the most common route among our customers is both-and: Klaviyo stays the email foundation, and Chatarmin adds WhatsApp as the reach channel.
Chatarmin's native Klaviyo integration syncs segments and events in both directions. Your Klaviyo segments trigger WhatsApp flows, and WhatsApp interactions feed back into your Klaviyo profiles. We pass Meta's messaging costs through at 1:1, in Germany around 11 cents net per marketing message since Meta's model change on 1 July 2025. Over 450 brands across the DACH region work this way, including Zelesta, CATRICE and Firebox.
This route still does not fit every shop. If WhatsApp is off the table for you in the next twelve months, you do not need a second platform. In that case, one of the four tools above, or simply staying, is the cleaner answer.
Klaviyo reviews: praise and criticism from external sources
On OMR Reviews, Klaviyo sits at 4.5 out of 5 stars from 116 reviews. The review summary praises the tight Shopify integration, the automations for flows and campaigns, and the ease of use. Criticised are high costs, occasionally the interface, and the lack of European server locations, which raises data protection concerns for some users (source: omr.com/de/reviews/product/klaviyo, retrieved 22 August 2026).
Both sides match the picture in this article: the product depth is undisputed, and the pressure comes from the pricing model and data location. Those are exactly the two points the alternatives above attack.
Conclusion: the right Klaviyo alternative depends on your bottleneck
Sort your search by the actual problem. If the bill hurts, start with list hygiene and a manual downgrade. After that, rapidmail and CleverReach are the affordable German candidates. If you lack automation depth beyond the shop, look at ActiveCampaign. If you want the Klaviyo logic at a lower price, Omnisend is the most direct replacement.
And if your real bottleneck is reach, the best Klaviyo alternative is a second channel next to your existing setup. If you want to see how WhatsApp runs alongside Klaviyo, we will show you in a short demo. 15 minutes, real numbers from your use case.
